So I saw Fly Me to the Moon. I thought it was a cute movie overall. Luckily, I didn’t think the conspiracy theory part of the story overshadowed it too much, and its made clear that the government agent asking to fake the moon landing is the villain.
As for the casting and performances, I thought everyone did fine. I hesitate to say that Channing Tatum is miscast, persay. Yes, he’s the launch director of the moon mission, but it’s also revealed that he’s an ex-Air Force pilot. I guess I just buy him as an ex-military guy. The description of him as “stuffy” doesn’t really fit, either. He’s strict and takes the project seriously, but “stuffy” doesn’t really match why his demeanor is so serious.
We learn later that he has a lot of guilt about one of the previous attempts at a moon landing going horribly wrong, so of course he wants to ensure that the mission is safe and successful this time around
And here’s where I see why that review said that “Evans makes more sense as Cole”: as I watched Tatum’s performance, I was trying to imagine Chris in the role. And, if how Channing Tatum plays him is more or less how they intended the character to come across, he is a very Steve Rogers-like character. He’s very serious about his mission, he’s ex-military, but he’s haunted by his past and he is adamant about maintaining the integrity of his crew. And all of this is reinforced by ScarJo’s character.
ScarJo plays an advertising agent. As such, her job is to stretch the truth to sell products. A less charitable way to describe what she does is that she lies. This is the main point of conflict between her and Channing’s character. Honestly, watching them play against each other, and imagining Chris in Channing’s shoes, the relationship is incredibly reminiscent of Steve and Natasha Romanoff’s dynamic in The Winter Soldier. She has to learn to let her walls down, and he has to learn to trust her. In terms of just the romance, this read like a 1960s Moon Launch AU! Romanogers fic.
Would this have been a better project for Chris to stick to? Well, there are two answers to that, imo.
I think if he had stayed with this movie, it would have overall just been a better project to have been a part of. The premise was interesting, the cast was very good, and the execution was fun. He’s proved he has good chemistry with ScarJo before (although, as we’ve discussed, his current personal mess may have affected his ability to gin up chemistry with any female co-star), and he’s proved he can play these serious, no-nonsense men with a dedication to integrity in all they do (Steve Rogers, natch, but also his character from Sunshine and Snowpiercer). I think it would have been a good performance.
However, if his goal is to move away from those Steve Rogers characters, I think it would have looked a bit like him keeping to his comfort zone if he had stayed. And the dynamic between his would-be character and ScarJo’s was VERY SteveNat, I don’t think critics would be able to resist making the comparison. I remember finding a review for The Red Sea Diving Resort and the reviewer kept saying CE’s character was too close to Steve Rogers as well. I have a feeling, even if the movie was good and his performance was good, the Steve Rogers and Captain America comparisons would have overshadowed that. It may have even been seen as a negative.
So it’s a toss up. A movie role where it would have been so easy (at least in theory) for him to have done well, and have a “good movie” in his more recent resume. But it comes at the risk of him getting typecast.
IDK, man, Chris looks like he’s running out of options. With that news about the Russos coming back to Marvel, and Disney not being so supportive of Sam Wilson as the new Cap, he may just succumb to the pressure to take the easy way out. I guess we’ll see how Red One does.
He was on track with Knives Out and that Apple show, but I don’t think Red One is going to help. So I’m not sure he really has a strategy. He also said he wasn’t going to do 3 movies in a year again and yet he’s doing 3 this year. Which leads me to my next point…

I mean, we all thought Abooba would completely cut off from the two Js once she locks Chreeps, but that clearly hasn’t happened. Why do we expect him to not be in touch with his bro then?
I definitely won’t deny the rest though. I’m honestly shocked at the amount of trips she’s already made to Portugal post marriage.
I agree about her being in Portugal quite a bit, but maybe she didn’t expect him to take on so many projects since he said he wouldn’t ’ever again’ or whatever he said in that interview. So very curious what we’ll see next…
