BALL, Caroline Mary - Passed peacefully away on March 29, 2003, Caroline Mary Ball (nee Grace) at her home in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL. Former President of the Canadian Ladies Curling Association and Provincial Girl Guide Commissioner. She was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame, the Provincial Sports Hall of Fame and the Provincial Curling Hall of Fame. She was well known for her involvement in amateur theatre and for her dedicated service to her parish and diocese. Predeceased by her husband Dr. Reginald W. Ball, parents Charles and Mary Grace, infant sister Eileen and brother John P. Grace. Leaving to mourn her three children; Sonia (Evan Poisson), R.G. (Jerry) Ball (Maureen) all of Calgary, AB and Cindy (John Fleet) of Happy Valley - Goose Bay, NL and her six grandsons Stephen, Ryan, and Regan Taylor, and Michael, Robert and David Fleet. HARLEY, Ruth Margaret (nee Taylor) - Peacefully on Monday, March 3, 2003 at the age of 94, in Ottawa. She was the deeply loved mother of Rory (Andrew) Harley, of her daughter-in-law Jane Harley and of her grandsons Christopher and Michael. She was loved deeply also by her son-in-law Richard Gwyn and by her daughter-in-law Danielle Fraser. She was cherished no less by her many life-long friends, including Jerry and Helen O`Brien and by their daughters Sarah and Jayne and by Christian Pavey who all regarded her as their grandmother.Born in Yarmouth, N.S., Ruth Harley studied at St. Mary`s Academy in Winnipeg and then moved with her parents George and Mary Taylor to St. John`s, NL. There she met and married Claude Fraser; both of their children, Sandra Fraser Gwyn and Nicholas Fraser, pre-deceased her. After Claude`s death in 1944, she married naval officer Frank Harley of Glasgow, Scotland, who also pre-deceased her. They settled in Ottawa. By her wit, her acute intelligence, and the warmth of her hospitality, Ruth Harley maintained an exceptionally wide circle of friends, from Newfoundland, from her navy days, and from Ottawa. Predeceased by her father Robert in 1995, she is survived by her loving mother Betty (Dunlop) Hoegg of Stellarton; sisters; Judith (Peter Ryan) of Halifax and Lois (Ches Crosbie) of St. John's, Newfoundland; nieces; Ariana Ryan, Charlotte, Catherine, and Rachel Crosbie; a loving, extended family and a wide circle of good friends. She will be particularly missed by her aunt, Hilda Hoegg of Halifax. Nancy lived a full and vital life until becoming ill at Christmas. She lived her last days with optimism and grace. A graduate of Mt. St. Vincent University (BBA 1979) and Dalhousie (MPA 1981), Nancy had a long career with the Government of Canada in Halifax, Moncton and Charlottetown, having recently returned to Halifax to work with Health Canada. Nancy was always active in various associations and her church in the community where she was livng. Visitation will be held at the H.C. MONOHAN, John Joseph "Jiggs" - Age 89 years of Dartmouth, N.S., died March 1, 2003 at home. Born in St. John`s, Nfld., he was a son of the late Edward and Elizabeth (McGrath) Monohan. He was a longtime employee of the Lord Nelson Hotel. He was an outstanding hockey player in St. John`s and enjoyed most sports. In his younger years in St. John`s, he rowed in the Regatta as well as played hockey at St. Bon`s and Holy Cross schools. After retirement, he took up golf and was a longtime member of Hartlen Point Golf Club. He is survived by sons Darrell (Dorothy) Williams, Donald (Marilyn) Williams), and Jon (Elizabeth) Williams, all Dartmouth, grandchildren Angela Lauzon, Michelle Williams, Nicholas Williams, Sandra Morley and Larry Williams. One great-grandchild. Two sister, Ellen Dinn, St. John`s, and Hilda Monohan, Boston. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Helen MacDonald, and a brother Michael. ---Sadly, and with overwhelming grief we announce the passing of dear Ben at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, Tuesday afternoon, March 18th, 2003. Surrounded by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Doris, and family. Survived by his brother Wim (Netty), sisters Marian (Kees) of the Netherlands, Inge (Han) of Virginia, Anke (Cris) of New York, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law of Newfoundland and many nieces and nephews and friends in the Netherlands, USA, Australia and Canada. Predeceased by his parents Wim and Anna Vriezen of Amsterdam and twin brother John. Ben's career in the burgeoning computer industry included the airlines which awakened a lifelong love of travel and adventure. His later career as a specialist in defence software initiated a lively and intelligent relationship with the world of computerization which he continued as a beloved hobby in his retirement. He embraced many interests including sailing, reading and collecting books, the arts, history, politics and accumulated a prodigious knowledge of Winson Churchill and his era. Ben was a member of the Dutch-Canadian Society and the Internationl Churchill Society. He was fascinated by the natural world and nurtured a keen enjoyment of the blessings of life. His queit faith was a wellspring of joy and greatly enhanced his outlook on life. Ben's circle of friends and relations spanned the globe and remained very close to his heart throughout his life. WOODS, Mary J. - Passed peacefully away at St. Clare`s Mercy Hospital on Saturday, March 15, 2003 at the age of 93 years, Mary J. Woods. Predeceased by her husband John Leonard (1942) and second husband Michael Woods (1973); sisters, Janet McGrath and Pheobe Avery and son and daughter-in-law Robert and Shirley Woods. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories her children Philip and John (Adele) Leonard; Helen (Gordon Reid); and William (Helene) Woods; her grandchildren and special niece Helen Mitchell. Resting at Caul`s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, Monday 10 a.m.-12 p.m., 2-5 p.m., and 7-10 p.m. Funeral service to take place Tuesday, March 18, 2003 from St. Patrick`s at 9:30 a.m. Interment to follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

YARD, Major Arthur Joseph - 88, husband of the late Bridget Ann Yard, died Friday March 28, 2003 at his home. He was born at Cape Broyle, Newfoundland June 3, 1914 and came to America in December of 1936. Mr. Yard served in the Merchant Marine from 1936-1941 and participated in the North Atlantic Run from America to Europe. When America became involved in the war, he joined the U.S. Army at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina and was assigned to the 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Division. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was later called to active duty at the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, serving during the summer and winter campaigns 1951-1952. Major Yard retired from the Army at Ft. Eustis, Va., in June 1966. He then took a position with the Department of the Army as a Marine Maintenance Supervisor of Equipment assigned to Vietnam. He served in that capacity until the end of the Vietnam War. Major Yard is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and former member of the Masters Mates and Pilots Association. He was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church in Newport News, Va. One more old soldier from World War II, Korea, and St. John`s, Newfoundland has been called home. Major Yard is survived by several nieces and nephews; and special friend and care giver, Sonja S. Rochelle. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., Tuesday at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at St. Jerome Catholic Church by the Rev. Joseph Majewski. Interment with full military honors will be in Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, Va. Arrangements are with Weymouth Funeral Home, 12746 Nettles Dr., Newport News, VA. 23606.
